Given the athletic nature of vinyasa yoga, anatomical alignment is frequently sacrificed for technique and pace. This workshop will be a thorough refresher on the architecture of asana. We will look intently at the shapes of the most common poses and the ways in which the body and mind distort the shapes, often resulting in injury.

Sweat and Sequencing: Backbending Focus

By opening the hip flexors, spine and shoulders, you will be in optimal shape to backbend. Once you're warmed up you will learn, in detail, the proper shoulder alignment for various backbends and useful techniques to get past physical and mental blocks that keep you from fully experiencing them.
Backbends are exhilarating postures when done well and can dramatically alter your practice and emotional state. Come ready to be challenged, elongated and inspired.

Sweat and Sequencing: Twisting Focus

You’ve probably heard that twisting in yoga asana is “detoxifying,” and that’s why you should do it. In this class you will learn and practice the detailed alignment of twists, including seated, standing and supine, and understand how to utilize your upper back and core when twisting.

Vikasa Yoga 100-hour Advanced Teacher Training in Koh Samui, Thailand

Vikasa Yoga is a school founded by Konstantin Miachin that focuses on the study of an integral system of yoga, as philosophy and inclusive lifestyle. Our philosophy is based on traditional concepts of hatha yoga, and classic science of yoga adapted for the modern life in western society. Regardless of your level of asana practice, this system provides all the necessary techniques for the attainment of high spiritual aspirations and excellent overall physical health. This course is considered the second part of the full 700-hour RYS Vikasa Yoga Teacher Training Program. This teacher training program will focus on advanced sequencing in hatha yoga, using rules and principles of Himalayan Vinyasa and Mandala sequencing. Different sub-styles of yoga will also be introduced with practices that challenge experienced students and are accessible to all levels of practitioners. There will be morning and evening intensives practices, where different sequence will be taught to support your capacity towards development. Precise explanations of the methodology will be given including unique tools for creation of beautiful sequences. In theory sessions we will examine the effect of such sequences on physical, energetic and informational aspects of our bodies. Some attention will be given to references from yogic texts, such as Hatha Yoga Pradipika by Swami Swatmarama and Gheranda Samhita. The lectures will include theory, history, teaching methodology and discussions. Also, more emphasis will be placed on physical adjustments. Another major topic is giving options to students in order to be able to teach a mixed level class with beginners and advanced students in one room. Each teacher should be able to give three variations of each pose while teaching a class: a base pose, a simplification for beginners, and modification for advanced students. Lastly, creation of personal programs for your students will be explained, giving you the opportunity to go beyond teaching private lessons with very limited benefits, and allow you and your students to maximize your potentials.Through daily yoga asana practice and lectures, we will explore a variety of yogic concepts and methods to create a new approach to this ancient practice. Students will be challenged to explore and expand upon their personal yoga practice in order to develop creative, conscious and intelligent teaching techniques.

Wendy and Darin have been studying, practicing and living yoga for more than 20 years. Darin and Wendy will introduce you to a meditative, hatha yoga practice that deals with energy and chakra awareness (Agama yoga).

They have taught yoga for many years in Thailand at Agama Yoga, in Kobe, Japan, as well as numerous retreats at Shanti Retreat which they co-founded in 2003.

A Spring Renewal Yoga Retreat of Flow, Yin, and Chant with Lana Sugarman at Shanti Retreat
